Maxine Maas had her hair professionally done for Napa Mayor Ed Henderson’s retirement party. Maas said she’s been “watching the mayor for years.” Maas, who recently celebrated her 80th birthday, leads an active social life. She is a serial volunteer, devoting a large part of her time to giving back to the community.

Herbert Karliner is a survivor of the S.S. St. Louis. In 1939, at 12 years old, Karliner was aboard the S.S. St. Louis with 900 Jews who had fled Germany. They United States denied the ships request to dock. Eventually the ship returned to Europe and Karliner found himself with his family in France. Eventually, his whole family was murdered in the Holocaust. Only Karliner and his brother survived.
